Learning Together

Education is a gift for life

The staff of St. Luke’s strongly believes that education is a gift for life. In order to empower children to become active and informed citizens of the local, national and global community and fully utilise the opportunities provided to them within our school community, we are committed to ensuring the best possible learning environment.

Learning & Teaching at St Luke’s

At St Luke’s Catholic Primary School, we believe every child can be a successful learner. Our approach to teaching is guided by the Science of Learning – research that helps us understand how children learn best and how teachers can support that learning effectively.

How We Teach

  • Clear and structured lessons: Teachers explicitly teach key ideas and skills so every child knows what they are learning and why.

  • Step-by-step learning: Lessons are broken into manageable parts to help students stay focused and remember what they’ve learned.

  • Regular review: Important concepts are revisited often to strengthen understanding and build long-term memory.

Creating a Positive Learning Environment

  • Consistent routines: Predictable classroom routines help students feel calm, organised, and ready to learn.

  • Active participation: Students are encouraged to be actively involved through discussion, hands-on tasks, and whole-class responses, ensuring everyone has a voice in their learning.

Building Skills and Confidence

  • We start with strong foundations in areas like reading, writing and number, and gradually build towards deeper understanding and independence.

  • Teachers provide support and guidance (called scaffolding) that is gradually reduced as students grow more confident and capable.

Through engaging classroom experiences and a vibrant specialist program, students at St Luke’s access all areas of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, including:

  • English

  • Mathematics

  • Health and Physical Education

  • Humanities – History, Geography, Civics & Citizenship, Economics & Business

  • Science

  • Technologies – Design and Digital

  • The Arts – Visual Arts, Media Arts, Dance, Drama, Music

  • Languages – Italian (Prep–6)

  • Capabilities – Critical and Creative Thinking, Ethical, Intercultural, and Personal and Social
